Finkelnburg did post-doctoral research at Cal Tech in the 1930s before returning to Germany and the University of Strasbourg in 1936. During the National Socialism era he was associated with the anti-Semitic and anti-theoretical school of Deutsche Physik. After the war he returned to the United States and taught until 1962 at the Catholic University of America. He then returned to Germany where he a general manager of Siemens-Schuckert.
The current book is a graduate level text book on the state of Atomic Physics immediately after the dropping of the first atomic bomb. Originally published in German in 1948 this is the first edition of the first translation into English.
